Embrace being a home barista: make coffee an experience

For many people, coffee is a quick start to the day. But for home baristas, it's more than that. It's a ritual, a moment of peace and creativity, and a chance to surprise friends and family with something special. The beauty is: anyone can become a home barista—you just need the right mindset, some beans, and a touch of curiosity.

Why home barista?

It's not just about caffeine. Being a home barista means being mindful of what you drink, savoring the flavors of specialty coffee, and having fun in the process. Every cup is an opportunity to learn and improve.

  • You make coffee that tastes better than in most cafes.
  • You discover new aromas and flavors in the same bean.
  • You share an experience that stays with people.

Start small, explore big

You don't need an expensive machine to get started. A simple filter set or a decent espresso machine is enough. It's all about experimenting: with grind size, proportions, and time.

Tip: Start with one bean and vary your brewing method. Brew it as an espresso, V60, or French press. You'll be amazed at how different the same bean can taste.

Learning to taste: where do you start?

Anyone can learn to recognize flavors, it just requires attention.

Three easy steps to better tasting:

  1. Smell before brewing The ground coffee. What do you recognize? Fruit, nuts, chocolate?
  2. Taste consciously in small sips – let the coffee roll around in your mouth for a moment.
  3. Compare 2 cups at a time (e.g. slightly coarser and slightly finer ground) and note the difference.

Practical example:

  • Make one filter coffee with a coarse grind and one with a fine grind.
  • The coarse grind often brings out fruity, fresh notes.
  • The fine grind actually emphasises body and sweetness.

This way you learn in a playful way how your brewing method influences the taste.

Create flavors by playing with moves

With small tweaks you can bring out or soften the flavors:

  • Grind finer → more extraction, often sweeter and fuller.
  • Grind coarser → less extraction, fresher and more acidic.
  • Shorter extraction time → fruity, sometimes a bit sour.
  • Longer extraction time → more bitters and intensity.
  • More coffee vs. water → stronger and more powerful cup.
  • Less coffee vs. water → lighter and more subtle.

Tip: Just keep trying one variable to change at the same time, otherwise you won't know where the difference comes from.

Make it a ritual

Making coffee only becomes truly special when you do it with attention. Grinding the beans, pouring the water, listening to the first drops of espresso – these are the little moments that slow down and enrich your day.

Try: Make your morning coffee without your phone or laptop. Just you, your machine, and the aroma of freshly ground beans.

Share your passion

Being a home barista is even more fun when you share it. Invite a friend to join you for a tasting, or organize a mini tasting session with different coffees. Take notes together—there are no wrong answers.

Idea: Make a cupping evening. Place several cups of coffee side by side, sip (yes, that's how it's supposed to be!), and discover new flavors.
